Sorry if this is an old question around these parts. A friend and I
have wondered for a long time to what book Lou was referring in "Romeo
Had Juliet."

Does anyone know?

Okay, I think I figured it out for myself. Given the timing and the
reference to New York being like Rome in the book, I'm guessing Lou was
referring to Tom Wolfe's 1987 book, "The Bonfire of the Vanities." If
anyone knows differently, please respond.
