I do have this - as well as the double-loaded... Doug Yule is the guy I'm
thinking about that replaced him... He's on a few songs on 'Loaded' and
wrote everything on this one.
These were recent acquistions by me.. I had never heard them 'back then'...
I LOVED 'White Light/White Heat'. But, I was surprised at how good these
last two were... Great songs...
Doug Yule was in the Velvets for years before Lou Reed left, and hethinking about that replaced him... He's on a few songs on 'Loaded' and

nauturally too Lou's place since he was able to sing and play
everything. The Velvets went to England, and apparantly the manager
sent the rest of them back to the US to secure the rights to the VU
name, and that's the reason Yule recorded "Squeeze" by himself. It is
absolutely a Velvet Underground record though, as these songs were
written, arranged, and some played live with the "New Velvet
Underground" years before "Squeeze" was released.
These live shows have been documented on, and can be heard on the
Japanese boxset "Final VU" which contains four live shows from 1971 -
1973, including the last show I think.
What do you think of Squeeze? I know a lot of people reject it as a VU
album, but it's definitely my favorite, it's so happy sounding and
catchy. It's at LEAST as good as the four albums that came before it,
and certainly better than "White Light/White Heat" would you agree?
always liked Doug Yule's stand in vocals on "Loaded" (though I'd have
prefered Lou on them) I never could get much interest up and maybe
listened to the entire record once or twice... musically and lyrically
it just doesn't come off as VU... imo Lou reed was irreplaceable, and
about as useless as continuing the Doors without Morrison.
I still have the record, but long since lost turntable access so can't
refresh my memory on it... has it ever been reissued on CD, or are
there any Mp3s of the songs? I'd like to give it another shot.
Do you remember that Doug Yule returned to tour with Reed during the
"Sally Can't Dance" era... and legends has it after Reed was knocked
out with a brick during a German show, Yule supposedly wore a kinky
blonde wig and sunglasses and actually /played/ Lou Reed for a show?
I think Lester Bangs wrote about this back in the day...
I came on board with Rock And Roll Animal in 1974, btw, and have been
along for the wild ride ever since!
